Arrival Day!
All the choristers arrived safely on campus, coming by bus, plane, or car from all across the country.
Quotes from Choristers.
Wow, this campus is rea beautiful!
Everyone at St. John's is so friendly!
So what are monks anyway, and what do they do all day?
Can we try on those black robes? (Only if you join up, and you're all too young.)
We've been practicing for a whole month, I can't wait until we all sing together!
What We Did Today.
The abbot (we learned he's the head of everything up here) welcomed us to campus and blessed us to begin the program.
Dinner in the refectory, not bad for institutional food. We ate with the counselors and staff, they're nice people.
We had our first meeting, and met everyone on the staff. Our conductor, Dr. Theimer, has a bit of an Austrian accent and really knows a lot about music.
Then we sang together for the first time, and sounded like a real choir right away - the four part harmony already sounds nice, and will only get better.
Then we had a popcorn party where we met a few more of the monks. They taught us about Benedictine hospitality and how they staff their own fire department.
We ended with closing prayer where we heard tomorrow's Gospel of Pentecost.
After that we went to our men's and women's dorms and met for quick meetings, and we all learned how to not monopolize limited bathroom and shower time.
To bed! Tomorrow will be a big day.
