Tenebrae factae sunt by Michael Haydn (1737-1806)
Tenebrae factae sunt, dum crucifixissent Jesum Judaei: et circa horam nonam exclamavit Jesus voce magna: Deus meus, Deus meus, ut quid me dereliquisti? Et inclinato capite, emisit spiritum. Exclamans Jesus, voce magna, ait: Pater, Pater, in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum. Et inclinato capite, emisit spiritum.
Darkness covered everything when the Jews* crucified Jesus: and at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice: My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? And bowing down his head, he breathed out his spirit. Crying out in a loud voice Jesus said: Father, Father, into your hands I commend my spirit. And bowing down his head, he breathed out his spirit.
* The Catholic Church teaches that the blame for the death of Jesus cannot be assigned to all the Jews of Jesus' day, nor should blame be assigned to succeeding generations of Jewish people into our time.
Adoro Te Devote, stanza 5
O memoriale mortis Domini, Panis vivus vitam praestans homini, Praesta meae menti de te vivere, Et te illi semper dulce sapere.
O memorial of the death of the Lord, Living bread bestowing life on humanity, Grant that my spirit might live from you, And always long tenderly for you.
- text by Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), from “Adoro te devote”
Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ, dass du Mensch geboren bist, von einer Jungfrau, das ist wahr, des freuet sich der Engel Shar. Kyrieleis.
May you be praised, Jesus Christ, that you were born as a man, from a Virgin, it is true, for this the host of angels rejoices. Kyrie eleison (Lord, have mercy).
Sicut Cervus by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1523-1594)
Sicut cervus desiderat ad fontes aquarum, ita desiderat anima mea ad te, Deus.
As the dear longs for streams of waters, so longs my soul for you, God. - Psalm 42:1
Regina Coeli by Colin Mawby (b. 1936)
Regina coeli, laetare, alleluia. Quia quem meruisti portare, alleluia. Resurrexit, sicut dixit, alleluia. Ora pro nobis Deum, alleluia.
Queen of heaven, rejoice, alleluia. For the one whom you merited to bear, alleluia. Rose, as he had foretold, alleluia. Pray for us to God, alleluia.
Veni, Creator Spiritus by Axel Theimer
Veni, Creator Spiritus,
Come, Creator Spirit,
Qui diceris Paraclitus,
You are called the Paraclete,
Tu, septiformis munere,
You, seven-fold gift,
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia. Send forth your spirit, and all your creatures shall be created, and you shall renew the face of the earth.
Accende lumen sensibus:
Enkindle light for our senses;
Hostem repellas longius,
Drive the enemy far away,
Per te sciamus da Patrem,
Through you, grant us to know the Father,
Deo Patri sit gloria,
To God the Father be glory,
